what do we do with trees uprooted in odisha:
“The high-velocity cyclone Phailin that hit Odisha about a week ago is estimated to have destroyed around 26 lakh trees in the state”.
after the last super cyclone, the sp of jagatsingpur had written to us ( the letterw as published in honey bee newsletter) how his servant told him that jamun wood could be used to purify the polluted water body. Can we convert this crisis in orissa into an opportunity for major wood based industrial revival? Immediately an estmiate must be made of species wise trees uprooted through crowd sourcing survey using mobile and other means. A mission should be mounted to unleash an entrepreneurial revolution in Odisha to use this wood for various kind of economic, social and cultural applications such as biomass energy generation( see dahiya’s technology at nifindia.org), wood extracts for medicinal uses, industrial applications, furniture, replanting in schools, and tannins and dye extraction, etc.,
It will be a pity if contractors may hay while local community suffer. we need to generate jobs to help people’s rehabilitation and these trees in Uttrakhand as well as Orissa could be put to high end use. any more ideas
