GRIN-HBN-CHIN 2 -grassroots innovation -my response to issues

 1. interaction will fast ( hasten) the process of GRI R&D and diffusion;

the forms of interaction between formal and informal sector has been studied at length;  see Biggs, 1987, Gupta, 1981, 1987, Chambers, 1987

briefly:

I argued that one could look at the follwowing  table

communication and power communication

communication
one way two way  no way
 one waypower
two way power
no way power

let students flll the boxes and write the nature of interaction that will follow in each cell, there might be null cell as well ( assignment  1)

idea is to understand the institutional conditions which shape the inetractions between formal and informal sectors.

will like to hear more about  such diemensions which we can use to generate more matrixes ( assignment 2)

2. The interaction between informal and formal sectors in promoting the development and diffusion of farmer innovation takes place not just as formal sector-driven but also informal sector-driven.

3. Farmer innovation provides substance to the formal innovation, vice versa.
4. interaction is not enough
5. GRI sometimes may hurt sustaible develment,  interaction sometimes may worse the situation

the research question 1-4 will be answered thorugh questionnaire, 5 will be answered thorugh case study

Research methodlogy:

1.base on the research quetsion, we design a questionnaire;
2. case study

notes:

1. 2000 farmer innovators’ stories(more than 3000 innovations). farmer innovators refer to those farmers when they started thier innitiatives of innovation: 1. no help from outside; 2. no higher education.

2. the team collect the detailed information thorugh net about one story, and fill in the questionnaire. we assume all the infomation on net is correct.

it is true that the interaction can be driven by either side, but what about langauge of each side, can the interaction take place without what we call translation function

to convert informal sector  problems or innovations in terminology or langauge ( that is semantics and epistemology) that formal sector can understand and vice versa

Assignment 3: what problems are likely to be faced while translating ( not linguistically alone, but conceptually or operationally ) concerns or knowledeg or insights  from one sector to

to another

take example and illustrate the problems and give  suggested solution, any practical  example  will help
3. we limit informal sector only to farmer innovator who satisfied satrdards mentioned in note 1.
formal sector means: 1. government organization; 2. research institute; 3. companies.
informal sector can mean any one who is not professionally trained, has not worked in organised sector and who has not been supported by any outside formal agencies substantively in terms of conceptualizing innovation( though some tiems we will come across the cases in which after innovation was conceived, some support was given by agencies of state or private sector, we will include such cases to learn about the way support is obtained, at what terms and with what effect)
4. government intervention is a kind of interaction;

indeed it could be, it could be to a) support financially, technologcially, administratievely ( say in regulations), b) collegial, for mutual learning, c) dominating ( one side dominates over other, instructs other) d) collaborative, problem is solved togther

many more ways are there

assignment 4: think of them and illustrate

5. the starting point of doing research on interavtion between formal and informal sector is from the beginning stage of innovation;
well, it can be at any stage,
6. we only study the most direct, and important impact of interaction

not necessarily, we need to look at different kinds of interactions, giving a contact is also part of supportive interaction, there can also be frustrating interactions, let students conceptualise form, effects  of interaction separately
we several times discussed the questionare and did the polit test, till now seems much better. will email you for comments once we confirm from the team.

case studies must precede design of  questionaires

at least 25 case studies are must before a meaningful questionaire can be designed
